How to Make Origami

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. It is believed that origami evolved from the practice of folding letters and other paper goods during the seventeenth century [1]. Since that time, origami has become increasingly popular in Japan and the rest of the world. Many people enjoy the challenge of learning to fold traditional and non-traditional origami creations. This article will help you to get started.

Steps

  1. Obtain the appropriate paper. Traditional origami directions usually assume you are starting with a square sheet of paper, but this is not always the case. Verify what you need from the instructions for your project before beginning. You can purchase square sheets of paper from craft stores, or you can make your own square paper from any rectangular sheet.
  2. ]]Get detailed instructions. When you're starting with origami, it's especially important to get instructions that are clear and easy to understand. Aim for simpler projects, then work your way up to more complex ones. Decide what type of origami you would like to make. Animals are probably the most familiar type of origami, but there are many other objects you can make as well. Here are some basic projects to get you started (there are links to more projects below):• Make an Origami Cat FaceFold a Cup from a Sheet of PaperMake a Paper HatMake a Cootie Catcher
  3. in the making]]Fold with care. Paying special attention to how you make your folds will create a more symmetrical and much sturdier origami. Fold on a solid flat surface, with good lighting. When instructed to make a fold along the center, for example, try especially hard to make sure the fold is perfectly centered--when you bring the edges of the paper together, have the corners meet exactly before you press down on the fold. Press down with your fingernail or a ruler--the fold should have an even strength. You don't want half of the fold to be more creased than the other.
  4. Be patient. Learning to make origami takes time. Work slowly and accurately so that you can become a better origami artist. Remember to enjoy the process of this beautiful art.
